Features

This event is a celebration of mid-summer. It provides a unique opportunity to swim one of the most famous and beautiful stretches of open water in the world, at what we believe is the most beautiful time of the day, dawn. A key feature of the event is that you arrive in darkness and walk half a mile to the start into the sunrise, up to the start following a bloke with a flaming torch. Once the safety briefing is completed getting into the inky black water at that time is a slightly surreal experience.

The swim is like no other open water swim you will have ever experienced and the feeling of having done it before most people have even woken up is very satisfying.

Saturday Evening Pasta Party
This popular evening event will once again be held on the Saturday evening prior to the Henley Classic, between 5 and 8pm. The evening will be in the style of an “all you can eat” Italian Pasta evening, including a choice of 3 sauces and a soft drink.

The cost will be £10 per head when pre booked or £12 per head on the evening.

Sleep & Eat Special Offer
For those who will be camping, we can also offer an early bird “Sleep & Eat Pass” for £18 per person, once again bookable on line, at the following link:-
Henley Classic Pasta Party & Camping Bookings

A cash bar and general cafe with snacks will also be available within the Food Court and Barn Bar Garden area.

Saturday Evening Registrations
The venue will be open from 4pm to 6pm for anyone who would like to register for the event early, to save time on the Sunday morning.

Course
The course is unique in that it is a straight line point to point swim (ie: no turns) and takes advantage of the boomed course of the Henley Royal Regatta.

Having said that, as with the race, you need to look at the conditions of entry and you still need to be a strong swimmer.

Eligibility
Due to a combination of factors (time of day, potential water/air temperature, and the fact that this is a 2.1km upstream swim) you need to be a strong experienced swimmer, capable of swimming continuously over 3km.

Entry Process

Following the success of our inaugural lottery ballot, which took place at the end of December and attracted entrants from as far afield as the USA, South Africa and Australia, entries will open at the beginning of April, on a first come first served basis. Details will be published here shortly.

Entry Ballot
The result of the Lottery Ballot will was announced on Friday 6th January, after which the successful candidates and pre-qualified swimmers were contacted by email with a Unique Pin, enabling them to confirm and pay for your entry. All unsuccessful candidates were contacted by email to inform them of the result.

Event History
This event originated as a swim in 2004, when two of the organisers, Tom Kean and Jeremy Laming, decided their backs had finally had enough of rowing and that it might be nice to swim the Henley Regatta course. So they could do this safely and without disrupting the rowing community at a busy time of the year, dawn was decided as the best time of day to do it, and that Jeremy’s old rowing club (Upper Thames) was the best place to meet.

Once they got over the shock of first light being 0400, the swim was unlike any they had done before. Thanks partly to some amazing photos and lots of talking, the following year a group of approximately 20 people assembled to do the swim at the same time. Since then the swim continued to grow until the numbers became so great that in 2008 it was run as an ‘official’ event, and has now evolved into the Henley Classic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Due to a combination of factors (time of day, potential water/air temperature, and the fact that this is a 2.1km upstream swim) you need to be a strong experienced swimmer. Our recommendation is that you are capable of comfortably carrying out regular continuous pool swims of 3km, and have had a number of open water swims. If in any doubt please come along and join us on the day to watch and help out, this will give you something to aspire to for the following year.

We have a stringent safety plan, with the approved number of canoe lifeguards to swimmers ratio.

If you have special circumstances such as a disability or have any concerns about your ability to complete this swim, we would much rather you contacted us at enquiries@henleyswim.com before entering.

Due to the popularity of this event, entry for the 2012 swim is by lottery draw. See the Lottery Entry Process. We are also be running an elite wave, so please email us your “swimming CV” to entries@henleyswim.com if you think you qualify as an elite.

This is our means of telling you there is a risk here and your means of telling us that you are happy with the risks.

If you have any doubts, or are in any way new to open water swimming we would strongly encourage you to enter the Sporting category with a wetsuit. The traditional category is only for experienced open water swimmers – if you do intend to enter this category we would expect you to have carried out a number of open water swims in just Speedos and be completely comfortable with the lack of buoyancy and temperature.

You will receive an email to confirm your entry once the Lottery has taken place in early January. You will then be required to use you Unique Pin to confirm and pay for your entry.

Yes. For skin swimmers we allow flip flops, hoodie and towel – we advise these are put in a named carrier bag. For wetsuited swimmers we allow just marked flip flops. They are all put in large ‘communal’ lettered bags at the start and taken to the finish line, so all you need to do is remember which bag you put your kit in at the start. We can’t carry valuables, but there will be a car key deposit system on the day at
registration.

We think this is the fairest way given the demand. However, if you finish in the top 20 of the 2012 Henley Mile (excluding the Sporting category) you will pre-qualify for the 2013 Classic.

Please check back regularly as we will be updating the site with all the latest news and gossip. You can also visit our Facebook Page and sign up to follow us on Twitter.

Yes. It’s £10 per person per night. You can book in advance from February onwards by using this link http://www.templeislandmeadows.com/henley-swim.asp

We would be delighted to accommodate any offers of help on the day. This is an excellent way of seeing things up close, perhaps with a view to taking part next year? We will also be offering anyone who helps a goodie bag and the potential of a priority entry in the following year’s event, subject to the conditions of the swim at that time. Get in touch via the info tab at the top.

Due to the time of year and the large amount of river traffic the rule is there is no swimming on the Henley reach other than during the race itself. The organisers of the Henley Classic have worked hard to secure a formal river closure from the Environment Agency between the hours of 0400 and 0600 on the morning of Sunday 24th June. This is the only period of time when it is advisable to swim in the River between Henley Bridge and Hambledon Lock.

Entrants into the Henley Classic are asked to respect this simple rule and anyone who is found to have compromised either their own safety or the integrity of the Henley Classic by not complying with this request will have their entry to the swim withdrawn. There are plenty of opportunities to swim nearby in the run up to the event, so keep checking Facebook for times and places of the training swims organised by Henley Open Water Swimming Club.
